Apple Computer and Hewlett-Packard Introduce Macintosh Application Environment Products for Japanese Market

Software Products Increase Productivity and Reduce Costs for Japanese Language Customers by Bringing the Functionality and Ease of Use of the Macintosh Computer to Hewlett-Packard and Sun UNIX Workstations

CUPERTINO, California--September 5, 1995--Apple Computer, Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that they are working together to create and distribute two Macintosh Application Environment (MAE) products for the Japanese market: MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit bundle and Nihongo MAE 2.0. Hewlett-Packard Japan will sell and support both products in Japan and key international markets.

These products, which provide open systems customers with a virtual Macintosh in an X Window, help increase productivity and reduce computing costs for Japanese customers.

"With physical office space at a premium and increased global competition, Japanese customers are looking for ways to increase productivity and reduce costs," said Fumiro Tsuruda, operation manager, Asia Pacific Product Operation, for Hewlett-Packard Japan. "The MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit and Nihongo MAE 2.0 software products will allow customers to meet these objectives by letting users run Macintosh productivity applications on their open systems workstations."

Apple Computer is working with Hewlett-Packard to develop MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit and Nihongo MAE 2.0. In addition, the products will be distributed and supported by HP. According to John Floisand, chairman, Apple Japan, Inc., "Our work with Hewlett-Packard is in line with Apple's goal to become increasingly open, both in terms of Macintosh and UNIX integration, and partnering with other companies to meet customer needs. Hewlett-Packard's experience in the UNIX market and in Japan makes them the right strategic partner to help develop, distribute, and support these products."

MAE Product Description

MAE is a software implementation of the Macintosh environment that runs on UNIX workstations from Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems. Through 68LC040 emulation and native extensions, MAE provides a virtual Macintosh environment in an X Window. This gives UNIX workstation users the ability to run "off-the-shelf" Macintosh 68K applications written for Mac OS on their workstations. Inaddition, MAE provides a high level of integration between the Macintosh environment and UNIX, enabling users to manipulate UNIX files and execute UNIX applications from the Macintosh environment.

MAE 2.0 also adds important features such as AppleTalk networking, performance enhancements, MacTCP and sound to further enhance the value and quality of the product.

MAE Products for the Japanese Market

There are two MAE products for the Japanese market. The first product, MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit, gives users the ability to run Japanese language Macintosh applications in an English language Macintosh environment. The second product, Nihongo MAE 2.0, gives users the ability to run Japanese applications in a fully localized Japanese System 7.1 Macintosh environment. MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit is planned to be released first with an easy migration path to Nihongo MAE 2.0.

Hewlett-Packard Japan will also provide "MAE 2.0 plus for HP-UX" on Hewlett-Packard workstations, which includes MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit and LaserVIEW, which can easily and quickly retrieve electronic dictionaries from hard disk or CD-ROM while on-line.

Availability

MAE 2.0 plus for HP-UX (including MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit) is scheduled to be available by the end of September 1995 and MAE 2.0 with Japanese Language Kit for Solaris is scheduled to be available by the end of October 1995. Nihongo MAE 2.0 for HP-UX and Nihongo MAE 2.0 for Solaris are scheduled to be available in the first half of 1996.
